The Solar Cell Fountain

Light is energy

Sunshine is wonderful because you get in a good mood, and there is a lot of energy in the light from the sun. On a summer day, the sun can heat a car so much that you almost burn yourself on the seats and the steering-wheel. Plants need light to grow, and in a full sun you can become sunburnt in a half hour even though the wind is blowing and it feels cold. Both examples have something to do with the energy in the light.

You can play with the energy from the sun at the Solar Cell Fountain. In every sunflower there is a solar cell with which you can control the fountain. If the sunflower is turned up against the sun, the solar cell produces a lot of electrical current. This will make the fountain jump very high into the air. Maybe your mom and dad can run through it? You have to make an effort so no one will become wet…

When the solar cell turns the sunlight into current, it is not because the solar cell gets warm. It is because the light goes into the material of the solar cell and makes an electric current flow in there. It is almost the same as getting sunburned. The light of the sun goes directly into the skin and irritates it, but this has nothing to do with the heat from the sun.

What happens in the solar cell is that the light knocks some electrons free inside the material, so that it is possible for them to move around freely. The special thing about the solar cell is that it has been made so that most of the free electrons move in the same direction. This creates the current.
