Tractors with huge rubber tires

A tractor must necessarily have very wide tires so as to not get stuck in the mud or soft soil.

But wide tires also serve to distribute the weight more evenly. A heavy-duty tractor may compress and damage the earth beneath it as much as half a meter down - and where the soil is compressed, the yield may be reduced by 50%.

Therefore, some tractors have caterpillars instead of wheels.

Often, the very big tractors will have two sets of rear wheels - some even have two sets of front wheels as well, giving the tractor a total of eight wheels.

The wheels of the biggest tractors are about 2 m high and 60 cm wide.

The Caterpillar Operator Challenge is the world's only international competition bringing together construction equipment operators from very different backgrounds and specialties into a standardized contest that measures operator skills.

One wheel may weigh as much as 500 kg, and should you need a spare tire, it may cost you well over 30,000 Danish kroner.

Did you know that:

Tractor championships are held in the disciplines of plowing and pulling heavy loads.

There are also international championships within the art of working with excavators.

The disciplines include dribbling a ball through an obstacle course with an excavator, stacking tires in a pre-defined order - or using the excavator shovel to pour a drink from a bottle into a small drinking glass.

There are also vehicles that do not have wheels, but move on legs instead. They are used for cutting trees in the forests. Using legs instead of wheels is a means to protecting the environment because the vehicle can move in and out between the trees and cut down the ones selected without damage to the forest floor.
