Move the cursor below the drawing, so you can see how the continents have moved.
During the history of the earth, the continents and oceans have moved and changed their appearance all the time, but for humanity it feels like the earth has moved and changed itself very slowly.
The continental plates are placed on a layer of fluid lava. The plates are almost “sailing” on top of the lava. They move all the time and create new continents, while new oceans form. The appearance and placement of continents and oceans changes all the time.
About 300 million years ago, Greenland was placed next to the equator, and about 200 million years ago, the animals could walk from Europe to North America.
When continents collide, mountain ranges get squeezed upwards, and volcanoes and earthquakes arise.
The first and largest continent we know about was ”Pangaea”. If we go approximately 225 million years back in time, there was only one big super continent called “Pangaea”. This super continent developed into two areas called “Laurasia”, which today constitutes of North America, Europe and Asia, while the other area called “Gondwanaland” developed into South America, Africa, Antarctica and India.
The earth has changed its appearance many times since then.
